Who are Functional Capacity examiners?
Functional capacity examiners are typically physical therapists or occupational therapists licensed in the jurisdiction in which the services are performed, who are able to demonstrate evidence of education, training, and competencies specific to the design, administration, and interpretation of FCEs.
Given the diversity of who can become a Functional Capacity examiner, how can one determine the best FCE protocol?
That is a great question!
It is important that Functional Capacity Examiners should utilize the best available evidence from clinically relevant research when designing and performing FCE protocols and when forming conclusions about an individual’s ability to safely participate in work and other major life activities.
Did you know that using a client centred approach will help gather information more effectively to understand what is currently important to the individual?
Understanding the needs of your clients is very significant! This develops a patient-professional relationship, comfortability and increase in patient retention!
This is additionally important as it helps identify past work experiences that may assist in the understanding of the current issues.

What are some things that Functional Capacity Examiners should be able to demonstrate at minimum?
- Examinations → History, systems review, tests and measures.
- Design and administration of FCEs, and interpretation of test results

- Ability to evaluate an individual’s performance and participation with an understanding that “a focus on the whole is considered stronger than a focus on isolated aspects of human function”
