Canadian Standards Association also known as CSA is a global organization dedicated to safety, social good and sustainability. They are leaders in Standards Development and in Testing, Inspection and Certification around the globe including Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia.
They published an applicable resource called the “Office ergonomics: An application standard for workplace ergonomics - CSA Z412:17 (R2023).”
Did you know that there are dimensions and adjustment ranges for your seat height?
The seat height ranges from 376 to 512mm*. (14.8” to 20.2”)
*The ranges to accommodate the 5th percentile female body dimensions to the 95th percentile male body dimension.
Is it common to find a chair with a cylinder that has a range of 136 mm (5.4”)?
Mechanical restrictions in the design of height adjustment mechanisms often make the 136 mm (5.4”) range, difficult to achieve in a single chair?
Does the height of the individual matter?
That is a great question!
Typically shorter individuals require a lower range cylinder, a chair with a that doesn’t move up and down as far. In contrast a taller individual, may require a greater range cylinder, that moves up and down the full range of 136 mm (5.4”).
What if your workspace has a high stool compared to an office chair?
The height range can be applicable to high stools as well.
