What is the CSA standard for Backrest Height?

Canadian Standards Association also known as CSA  is a global organization dedicated to safety, social good and sustainability. They are leaders in Standards Development and in Testing, Inspection and Certification around the globe including Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia.

They published an applicable resource called the “Office ergonomics: An application standard for workplace ergonomics - CSA Z412:17 (R2023).”

What is a backrest height? Did you know that there are dimensions and adjustment ranges for your backrest height?

It is the distance from the top of the seat (compressed) to the top of the backrest.

The dimensions are ≥ 354mm.

That is important information! Now you can adjust your backrest height to ensure that you get the comfort you need!

What are the landmarks to measure Backrest height?

Backrest height is measured from the tenth rib mid-spine, sitting and acromial height, sitting.

Is there a minimum backrest height?

There is no sufficient evidence to support a recommendation for minimum backrest height, but the backrest should at least support the lumbar region.

Higher backrests are recommended for chairs that recline in order to support the upper back/shoulder region.
